Rajasthan is estimated to have produced nearly 800tonnes of date palm from first harvest &the yield is expected to rise significantly in the coming years. The state government had started date palm cultivation on a trial basis in 135 hectares of its own farmland in Jaisalmer & Bikaner and had imported around 21,294 tissue culture raised sapling from UAE. The state government promoting date palm farming on farmers land in the districts of Jaisalmer, Barmer, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Hanumangard,Sri ganganagar, Nagaur, Pali, Jalor, Jhunjhunu, Sirohi & Churu. The harvesting of date palms starts from June till September. A date plant takes 8-9 years to mature to bear harvest. The state government is promoting date palm farming in arid desert regions of north Western Rajasthan & giving tissue culture raised sapling to farmers at a subsidised rate under the centrally sponsored scheme Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY).
